Dog and Animal Wardens
Work to ensure the public are safe from stray and dangerous dogs, stray livestock and animals. Also provide information and education on responsible ownership
Duties of the Dog and Animal Wardens in Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan include:
- Collecting stray and unwanted dogs/ animals
- Return lost dogs/ animals to their owners
- Give advice and education to dog/ animal owners
- Investigate complaints of aggressive dogs
- Investigate and patrol for dog fouling
- Education and school talks
Dog Control Orders (DCO)
Dog Control Orders are issued to enforce responsible dog ownership. This means that in public areas with DCOs, you may have to:
- Keep the dog on a lead
- Put the dog on a lead if told to by a police officer, police community support officer or an environmental health officer
- Stop the dog going in certain places - like farmland or parts of a park
- Limit the number of dogs you have with you
- Clear up after the dog
Report Stray or Dangerous Animals
To report a stray or dangerous animal including dogs and livestock please contact your local authority. Dog / animal complaints will be handled within a 5 day time scale. There is a 2 day response on dangerous dogs depending on situation

Lost Dogs
If you lose your dog we are here to help. As soon as you are aware that your dog is missing contact Shared Regulatory Services or nearest kennels.

Please Note: There is a daily charge for food, lodgings, medical attention and vaccination costs, as well as a statutory government fine if your dog is taken to a kennels.
Found Dogs
If you find a dog that is obviously lost, check to see if the dog is wearing a collar and an identification disc. You may wish to hold onto the dog while you try to find or contact the owner. You are also legally obliged to contact your local authority:

Please provide details of the dog including where and when you found it. The dog will need to be checked for a micro-chip either by our dog warden, a vet or brought in to the kennels by you.
We will check if the owner has reported it missing. If they have, then we will try to reunite the dog with its owner. If the dog has not been reported missing, the Dog Warden will come and collect the dog from you during office hours.
