Weights and Measures

Shared Regulatory Services is responsible for metrology, traditionally known as weights and measures, and is responsible for enforcing the Weights and Measures Act 1985.

Our service has a responsibility for ensuring consumers and other businesses do not receive short weight when purchasing goods. All weighing and measuring equipment used for trade has to be legally approved and tested before it can be used.

All approved equipment is marked in some way like the crown stamp on a beer glass, or the stamp on the scales that weigh your fruit and vegetables.

Any equipment that is used to determine weight or measure which is used for trade purposes is periodically checked by a qualified officer during routine inspections to ensure that the equipment is accurate.
